IT IS TIME TO START APPLYING TO COLLEGES...INCLUDING PURDUE!!!

Hello Future College Students,

I hope you are all having a great summer and getting excited about your senior year. It is hard to believe, but The Purdue admissions application goes live on August 1st!!!

Below are tips in how to make the college search more fun and less stressful!

Come visit us. It will not hurt we promise!

-Have a spreadsheet-like system that lists all deadlines for all colleges. (These deadlines are not only different but they will sneak up on you as well!) Here at Purdue , the scholarship deadline is November 1st. Since we are rolling admissions, apply early so more space is available.

-Work on outside scholarships profiles now, before you get tied up with your high school classes. I recommend sites like fastweb.com and scholarship.com. If you are willing to apply to lots of scholarships the money could start to add up!

-Confirm that universities have received all of your materials. At Purdue you can do this online.

-Include a letter of recommendation. While this is not required at Purdue, it never hurts to ask someone to write the letter who knows you personally or professionally.

-Do not rely only on spell check for your applications and essay; have a trusted person look it over.

-Be pleasant yet persistent while requesting transcripts and letters of rec from teachers and counselors; give them as much notice ahead of time as possible.

-When it comes to submitting applications, think quality (4-7 apps) over quantity. This will cost less money, take less time, and allow other students to gain open spots at various universities that are their top choices.

-Schedule college visits 2 weeks ahead, and do your best to go when school is in session so you can get a proper feel for the place. Make appointments for tours, specific academic departments, and any other meeting before you arrive.

-Try not to take a university's decision personal (even though it may be hard). If you want to go to college, you will find a great place. Highly selective universities make decisions on multiple criteria and can't accept everyone who is qualified. You are smart, creative, and the only you on the planet. You can be successful at multiple universities. What you do on campus is more important than which campus you're on!

-Stay positive and be excited!!! Going to college will be awesome. Enjoy your senior year and try not to get too wrapped up in the process.

-If I can ever be of any help, contact me! dbowker@purdue.edu

Best of Luck!!!
