Since May 16, 2016, I have been working in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am a rising junior in Civil Engineering and I was fortunate to receive an internship at Moss & Associates, a construction management company, at their corporate office this summer. Working at headquarters has taught me about the entirety of the construction process - from pre-construction, to BIM, what is BIM modeling - this needs to be spelled out then (BIM) for common reader? Modeling, to the construction phase of projects.
In addition to work, my roommate, Lauren, and I explore southern Florida every chance we get. She is studying Mechanical Engineering at Purdue and is working for NextEra Energy at their Fort Lauderdale power plant. Lauren was actually the first friend I made at Purdue because I sat next to her our first day of Engineering 131 in fall of 2014. We have absolutely no idea how we ended up with different internships in the same city in Florida, but it has easily been the best summer of our lives.
Nearly every weekend we do something new, but here are some of our latest summer adventures:
-Spent a weekend in Orlando visiting a fellow PSEF member and a Civil Engineering friend, and going to Universal Studios, Disney Springs, and Cocoa Beach
-Biked through the Everglades National Park and looked for alligators in Fort Lauderdale
-Took a weekend trip to Nassau, Bahamas, which was incredible!
-Attended a Sublime concert in Miami after our day trip to Wynwood Art District
-Explored South Beach (since then, we have visited Miami a few other times because there are an endless amount of things to do, such as the zoo! There we held foxes, gators, pythons, tarantulas, baby sloths, pet kangaroos, piglets, and wolves)
-Parasailed and snorkeled in Key Largo with my mom
On our free weekends (which are rare), we explore new coffee places in the area, go to the Fort Lauderdale beach, and binge watch Girls on Netflix. We even spent the Fourth of July there along with thousands of other vacationers and Floridians, and saw an amazing fireworks show on the beach. Since we have less than two weeks left in our internships, our last big trip is the weekend we finish work. We have tickets to an all-inclusive resort in Cancun for Lauren's birthday weekend in early August.
Although I love Purdue with all my heart, it will be hard to go back to Indiana after spending such an amazing summer with my best friend in Florida.
