buzzing this week with new students, returning students, and various
activities. One of the exciting parts of the first few weeks of classes is
figuring out which organizations to join. Purdue has over one thousand student
organizations, so there is bound to be one that suits your interests! There are
almost 100 engineering related ones organizations, some that are even
discipline specific. There are also hundreds of other organizations focused on
academics, community service, various religions, activities, and fun! To find
these organizations, log onto BoilerLink and begin searching! Here is a list of
10 engineering-related student organizations on campus to jumpstart your
search:
BoilerMake
“It shall be the purpose of
BoilerMake to organize and run events providing students with Computer Science,
Engineering, or Entrepreneurship related experience. These events will offer
students the opportunity to further their skills in these fields, meet industry
mentors, and participate in the hacker community at Purdue.”
Engineering World Health
“Engineering World Health is a
national organization with three main components: Equipment Repair, Design
Team, and Trinity Outreach. The Purdue chapter focuses on the Design Team
component, working to develop low-cost medical devices which are compatible for
use in developing countries. Past projects have included a neonatal incubator tester,
a comfortable tocodynameter to measure contraction strength in pregnant women,
and a solar-powered autoclave. Participation in this organization provides
members with valuable engineering experience and the opportunity to develop and
improve technical skills while working in teams to solve healthcare problems
around the world. Membership is open to all Purdue students.”
Engineers without Borders
“EWB-Purdue
is a student chapter of EWB-USA committed to using its skills as engineers to
enrich the educational and pre-professional experience of its members while
promoting global community development, locally and abroad. Its mission is to
partner with the Purdue community, the professional chapters, and developing
communities worldwide to implement sustainable engineering projects that
promote the advancement of global community development through engineering
skills and knowledge.”
Latinos in Science and Engineering
“The
mission of this chapter is to promote, cultivate, and honor excellence in
education and leadership among Latino engineers and scientists. The mission of
this chapter is also to increase the number of Latino engineers at Purdue
University by providing awareness of engineering discipline among local high
schools and a strong sense of community among all Latinos. Our vision is a
future where Latinos are leaders in the engineering and science world.”
National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
“NSBE
started as the Society of Black Engineers (SBE) right here at Purdue
University. Because of this fact, Purdue is also known as the alpha or mother
chapter of NSBE. What we know today as NSBE came into being as a result of a
conference planned and hosted by SBE at Purdue in April 1975.
Our Mission:
to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel
academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”
Purdue iGEM
“The International Genetically
Engineered Machine (iGEM) team annually designs, executes, and communicates a
comprehensive research project in the world’s premier synthetic biology
competition. Each fall, over 300 teams from around the globe convene in Boston
to present their findings before the international scientific community. The
organization is dedicated to education and competition, the advancement of
synthetic biology, and the development of an open community and collaboration.”
Purdue Student Engineering Foundation
(PSEF)
“The Purdue Student Engineering
Foundation is an organization dedicated to promoting engineering awareness amongst
youth, prospective students, Purdue Alumni, Purdue freshmen, and the community.
PSEF is an extraordinarily dedicated and enthusiastic group. Through a variety
of unique programs, PSEF members work to promote education and careers in
engineering, as well as the advancement of engineering in today’s society.”
Purdue Student Sustainability Council
(PSSC)
“The Purdue Student
Sustainability Council seeks to promote a culture of sustainability at Purdue
and facilitate communication between students, faculty, and staff surrounding
sustainability initiatives.”
Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
“Mission: To empower and support
women through inclusive and innovative high quality programs that provide
technical and leadership experience in open and encouraging environments. PSWE
is dedication to motivating young women to attain the highest levels of
education and career advancement.”
Theme Park Engineering and
Design at Purdue
“TPED at Purdue
will explore the many opportunities that theme park engineering and design has
to offer through guest speakers, off-season tours of parks, field trips to
parks, and participating in nationwide design competitions. TPED will offer
students access to a niche field that is often hard to access and even harder
to land a job in. The group also looks to serve the campus and community
through volunteering and hosting local events to teach the public about the
engineering and design side of theme parks.”
