An Inside Look on Engineering - Mechanical Engineering

When the time came to choose which engineering field I wanted to study, I was torn; all the disciplines sounded exciting and I didn’t want to settle with only one! After looking more in-depth at all the different options, I chose Mechanical Engineering (ME) because of its breadth and the diverse areas of focus. Being one of the broadest engineering disciplines, mechanical engineering can lead to work in many different disciplines, from aerodynamicsto automotive, electrical, design, energy, or entrepreneurship, just to name a few. Because ME overlaps with many other engineering disciplines, it can play a role in nearly any field, meaning no mechanical engineer is the same. A mechanical engineer could design and develop new manufacturing systems, be an entrepreneur starting their own business, or work in a research lab studying nanotechnologies - to name a few options.

Mechanical Engineering is the largest school in the College of Engineering at Purdue and we have a lot to offer. Students take a few core courses, such as mechanics, thermodynamics, and materials science, and later add on specific courses related to their focus within ME. I myself want to work with energy and help develop cleaner power solutions, and can take courses such as the Green Engines and Clean Fuel course and other Nuclear Engineering courses. A popular class students love is ME 444, the “Toy Design” class, where students design, create, critique, and sell a toy while developing skills in Computer-Aided Design, 3D printing, and marketing.

On top of my studies, I get to see concepts I’ve learned put into action while working as a process engineer through the co-op program with Kimberly-Clark Professional where I get to work in manufacturing plants and study the equipment to find and implement any improvements that may boost production efficiency. My time spent both studying on campus and away working while on co-op have further confirmed that ME is the right fit for me!
