A Message from Purdue's Lori Pence on Affordability

Dear Admitted Students and Families,

Greetings from Purdue Engineering!

Every spring the College of Engineering enjoys welcoming admitted students and their families to campus. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to engage in conversations and answer your questions about Purdue Engineering.  One conversation I have with many families focuses on making a Purdue Engineering degree affordable.  While we can no longer have this conversation in person, I can still personally provide this information to you and your family through this letter and the “EngineeringWhatsNext” video series that the Office of Future Engineers and I have been collaborating on.

Affordability and return on investment are significant factors in the college choice process and we know that these factors are even more important today, given the financial implications of COVID-19.  I encourage you to view the electronic Purdue Engineering Investment and Affordability brochure on the College of Engineering Undergraduate Education website.

Purdue has been focused on student affordability for several years.  Our cost of attendance is actually less than it was in nine years ago. Maintaining affordability for Indiana residents and nonresidents at every income level is an important part of our land-grant mission and President Daniels’ affordability goals.

In addition to President Daniels’ affordability goals, the College of Engineering awards $3.8 million in scholarships annually to undergraduate students in the college and professional schools. Majority of the scholarships are major specific.  Students will have the opportunity to apply for scholarships as a rising sophomore, junior and senior. The number of scholarships available and dollar amount varies by major.  However, the average scholarship amount is around $2,300.

In addition to scholarships, many families find that participating in Engineering Cooperative education (co-op) programs is a terrific means of not only obtaining highly valuable experience in industry, but also providing significant funds for the student’s education. Students can earn $10,000 - $15,000 per co-op rotation during an academic semester.

We hope that you and your family will consider the high value and long-term investment of a Purdue Engineering education. We very much hope to welcome you to Purdue in the fall.

Best regards,

Lori Pence
Associate Director for Student Success
