During your time at Purdue, there are a few things every student should experience... here's a list of the top 10!
1.
Ride the Boilermaker Special
The Boilermaker Special is the official mascot of Purdue and
can be found at all the home and away football games, as well as all home
basketball and volleyball games. Not only is the Boilermaker Special our mascot, but it is a means of transportation and is available to give rides! If you want a chance to ride on the
Boilermaker Special, the Reamer Club hosts Free Ride Fridays in which they
offer free rides of the Boilermaker Special every Friday before home football
games between 12:00pm-3:00pm in front of Stewart.
2.
Fountain Run
A typical fountain run includes running through the Engineering Fountain, Loeb Fountain, Memorial
Fountain, and a stop at the Lion Head Fountain to drink from all four lion
heads. It is the perfect study break, escape from the heat, and an
energizing and fun way to participate in a tradition that has been a part of
Purdue since the late 1980s.
3.
Grand Prix
Known as the “greatest spectacle in college racing,” Grand
Prix is one event you won’t want to miss. The race began as a chance for Purdue
engineering students to practice and show off their skills. It is now
sponsored by the Grand Prix Foundation, completely run by students, and works
to raise funds for student scholarships.
4.
Flicks at Fowler
Fowler Hall shows various movies about once to twice a month throughout the school year perfect for an outing with friends, date night, or activity while your family visits. These
showings are free with your Purdue ID and $4 for any guest. The best part? The
movies played at Fowler are either still in theatre, or not released as a DVD
yet!
5.
Clapping Circle
Located
outside of Heavilon Hall, the clapping circle is an architectural phenomenon.
If you stand in the direct center of the circle and clap, you will receive more
than just an echo back. Surrounded by concrete ledges to sit on and plenty of
grass and trees to study and relax by, the clapping circle offers more than a
sonic surprise.
6.
Picture with Armstrong
Neil Armstrong has left a lasting legacy at Purdue. In order
to honor him, Purdue has dedicated the Hall of Engineering to him as well as
creating a statue of Armstrong as a student outside of the building. This is
the great spot for a photo and to be reminded of the potential we all have
inside of us. While taking a photo, try out the footprint challenge on the lawn
by the statue – making it across all of his footprints without touching the
grass.
7.
Attend at least one football and basketball game
One of the best parts of attending a Big 10 school is the
sports! Take advantage of your time as a Boilermaker by joining your fellow
students and fans in the stands to cheer on our teams. The football and
basketball games are particularly full of energy, but each sport event is a
great way to show off school pride and support our teammates. (bonus: attend at
least one game of each Purdue sport)
8.
Attend a concert put on by PSUB
Each fall, the Purdue Student Union Board presents a free
concert for Purdue students. In the past, Walk the Moon and Parachute have
performed. This year the main act will be MisterWives. Besides the free
concert, PSUB hosts other fall concerts that students can purchase tickets for.
These concerts are a perfect evening activity, especially because they don’t
require you to travel any further than Slayter or Elliot for a stellar
performance!
9.
Sledding on Slayter
Slayter Hill holds
potential for so many fun adventures. While Slayter is officially used for
various concerts throughout the year and tailgating before football games, it
can be used for so much more! Whether you need a place for a picnic, game of
disc golf or ultimate Frisbee, or more, Slayter is the perfect location. During the snowy months, be sure to go
sledding down Slayter Hill – a fun winter experience every Purdue student
should enjoy.
10.
Boiler Gold Rush
Boiler Gold Rush (BGR) is Purdue’s one-week orientation
program for new students. Starting the week before classes begin, students are
put into groups with other new students with led by a Team Leader
and attend various events, programs, and activities throughout the week. BGR is
full of Purdue pride and learning what it means to be a Boilermaker. If you
didn’t attend BGR as a new student, it’s not too late! You can apply to be a Team
Leader and lead a group of new students for this wonderful week.
