Inside Look - Materials Engineering

Hi! My name is Renee DiNino, and I am a junior in Materials Engineering (MSE) at Purdue University. When I started my journey at Purdue, I was unsure on what engineering discipline I wanted to study. After being exposed to all of the programs, I decided to choose MSE and have loved it ever since!

In MSE, our saying is “You can’t make it without materials.” This phrase was what initially drew me into the school because it made me realize that everywhere you look there are materials. Another reason why I decided to study MSE is my interest in biomaterials. I have always had a passion to help others and work in the medical field, so I thought a degree in MSE would allow me to achieve my goal of improving the quality of life.

The awesome thing about MSE is that you are not limited to one industry! Even though my main interest is the medical field, I had the amazing opportunity to intern with ArcelorMittal this past summer, the world’s leading steel and mining company. I worked as a Metallurgical Engineering Intern and was assigned a project where I analyzed production data to improve the process yield and, therefore, increase the company’s revenue. This upcoming summer, I hope to obtain an internship with a company that works with consumer products or medical devices. If you want the ability to work in diverse industries, MSE may be the right choice for you!

My favorite thing about MSE at Purdue is the small class sizes that allow you to get to know your classmates and professors well. I find that it’s easier to learn and ask questions with less students in a room. Having the opportunity to get to know your professors well is always beneficial, especially if you want to do undergraduate research. This semester, I started doing research that involves the detection of pesticides and heavy metals using biosensors. I enjoy doing research because, not only will it provide me with skills that will help me obtain a Research and Development career one day, it’s also a way to get class credit for technical electives. If you want an exciting break from the classroom and some hands-on experience, I highly recommend looking into undergrad research.

Two short years ago, I had no idea that Purdue would bring me a major I love that provided me with great engineering experience even before I graduate. I am ever grateful that I get to study MSE and learn new and exciting things every day from amazing professors. I am so excited to see what my MSE degree from Purdue will allow me and my fellow classmates to do in the future!

And this was just one MSE story! If you would like more information on MSE, please contact our Academic Advisor Vicki Cline at vicline@purdue.edu or by checking out our website at https://engineering.purdue.edu/MSE.

Boiler up!

Renee
